The drum is the oldest known musical instrument in the history of civilization and its basic design has not changed in thousands of years. Drumming has a profound history as a method of communication, and the drum has an implementation of religious symbolism.

Drums are a lot of fun to play, and every rock or pop band needs them, so drummers are in ever increasing demand. There are different methods on how to learn and play this instrument. Different sized drums and cymbals are arranged into kits, where a drummer can pick from a variety of sounds to lead or accompany a particular song.

For starters, you can read on some basic care for your drum set. This includes setting up the drum kit, caring for the cymbals, and tuning the drums. While thinking of learning to play these one must have these four things:

A pair of drumsticks.

A practice pad which simulate the bounce of an actual drum, and usually have a rubber surface.

A metronome to keep a steady beat.

Some learning materials.

If someone is thinking of getting a professional help to learn to play this instrument well, they will learn how to set up the new drum kit, basic stick grip tips and techniques, using the kick drum and hi-hat pedals, playing rock and jazz patterns, and using dynamics to make the playing more interesting.

Simple steps to learn to play drums

The first step to do this is by counting. It is said that if you can count to four, you can play the drums. Counting till 4 will be the basis of the beat. Virtually all major rock beats are built around basic 4/4 time signature. It basically means that each measure or bar of music is split into four quarter notes.

Then with the right hand the hi-hat is hit on every count. The hi-hats are the foundation of most basic rock drumming beats as they typically hold a steady pulse while other limbs fill in on the snare and the bass versions. The rest is actually quite simple. Then the bass and snare versions should be added on the counts of 1 and 3 respectively. This will be the basic drum beat.

When the basics are learnt you will be able to see how beats are built around this basic pattern. This is the basics to most rock drumming beats and grooves.

The next step for learning how to play this well is to practice stick control and the rudiments. Drums rudiments help one to build independence and speed. The two most common rudiments are the single stroke roll and the double stroke roll. Since drumming is all about beats and counts, a drummer should be very precise in timing. Timing is a major factor while learning to play drums. A drummer should be able to create the mood and groove for any song, adding fills and accents in to pep things up.

Conclusion

The art of drumming possesses a huge variety of benefits in all aspects of day to day life. Most of the skills and techniques learned with this art can be applied to other situations. Drumming is a good activity for those who love to listen and create music while concentrating on rhythm.

Membranophone is what a drum is technically known. The musical instrument is classified under the percussion group. Here are few basic guidelines for getting started with drums. The size, pattern and shape of drums vary widely. But almost every drum has at least one membrane. This one membrane is known as drum head. A drummer can produce sounds from a drum by beating on the drumhead with drumstick or a part of his body, likely to be hands.

Drums are traditionally untuned instruments. But there are exceptions like timpani. Drums are generally cylinder in shape. These are the oldest musical instrument played by ancient tribes and race. Modern orchestral drums are held on a hoop, which is fixed on a counter hoop with tension rods. The number of the tension rods varies from six to ten. The sound quality of the drum depends on few basic factors like

Shape

Size

Shell density

Shell material

Drumhead pattern

Drumhead tension

Position of the drum

Location of the drum

The velocity and angle with which the drumhead is bitten

Before getting started with drums, you should arrange few basic things

A good music collection on drums

A beginner’s guidance book for ready reference

A pair of good drumsticks

A practice pad

A metronome

As the first step for getting started with drums, you must learn how to hold drumsticks properly. As different types of grips on drumsticks produce different sounds, so it is very important to understand which type of grip produce what type of sound. There are various options like traditional grip, matched grip, French grip etc. Different holds will produce different vibrations, bounce and response. It is better to practice and see the difference yourself initially.

The second important thing is counting time. As you learn to count time, you will be able to understand various notes, beats and time signatures. Before getting started with drums, here are few important technical terms that you must know to understand the drum music

Note. It is a stroke, rather a symbol representing a stroke on the drum.

Bar. It is a measure. It is the space where a beat can be played.

Time signature. It is the representation in a fraction that reveals the number of notes in a measure. There are various signatures like 4/4, 3 /4, 5/4, 7/8 etc.

Here the top number denotes the number of notes per bar, and the bottom number, known as denominator, tells the value of the notes. For example, denominator 1 is a whole note, 2 is a half note, 4 a quarter note, 8 a eight note and 12 a sixteenth note. There are also other variations like triplets and odd times.

On getting started with drums, you should also know to tune your drum by yourself. Based on various purposes and musical genre, different tunings are required. As you are the player of your drum, so be the expert on drum. There are various processes for installing the drumhead, tuning the batter head and tuning the drum. Choose your genre and tune it as required.

As you get accustomed with these basic drumming requirements, the next thing you should do for getting started with drums is learn to read music sheets for drum compositions and teach yourself with some basic theories. This will not only help to raise your knowledge on how to play drums, but also make you prepared for future music compositions by yourself.

Drumming is a great art to master. Not only does it require a great deal of dexterity and coordination, but it also requires the drummer to really feel and get into the music that he is playing. The drum set is a great musical instrument that takes a lot of practice in order to become great at.

Sometimes, however, practicing may become a little bit of a problem if you do not have a music studio at your convenience. If you live in an apartment or close to neighbors, your practice sessions will make a great deal of noise and you may potentially become a nuisance and an annoyance to you neighbors and the people that you live with as well. In addition, you may have a busy schedule which only affords you to practice your drumming at night. Being noisy at night will upset the sleeping patterns of your neighbors and you may even be justly fined with a ticket from your local police department for disturbing the peace.

Do not fret too much. There are a couple of solutions that can afford you the ability to practice your drumming just about any time you want without disturbing anyone.

Drum Pad Silencers

Drum pad silencers are simple pads made out of a rubber-like material that you apply onto the top of your drums. These drum pad silencers absorb the sound that hitting the drums with your drumsticks make while at the same time still preserving a good amount of the same natural stick bounce and feel of your drum set. They even make these great silencer pads for the bass drum and cymbals.

Do not get me wrong, you will still create some noise while you are practicing with the drum pad silencers on. However, if you close your room door, your family will hardly hear a thing, and your neighbors will not hear a thing at all. So, with drum pad silencers, you can rock out on your drum set at any time of the day that you wish without disturbing the peace of anyone.

Rock Band

Have you heard of the video game Rock Band? Well, if you are a musician, than you should familiarize yourself with Rock Band. Granted, playing this video game is not really like playing in an actual rock band, the drum set in Rock Band comes pretty close to the real thing. The drum sequences in the video game are pretty awesome, and will test your drumming skills. These things are fairly quiet, but if you want it even quieter, they make drum pad silencers for the drum set made for Rock Band.

If you have got a set of headphones for your television and you have drum silencer pads, you are good to practice drumming with Rock Band almost at any time that you would like. It is a fun way to practice and test your coordination and dexterity.

So, these are just a couple of examples that should get you started with practicing your drumming quietly or as quietly as possible at the least. Rock on!

Thinking about playing the drums? The best way to get started for less money is with a practice pad. You don’t have to go out and spend a fortune on a full drum set and accessories right off the bat. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

Practice pads are soft, bouncy pads that you use to practice drumming patterns or rudiments. Advantages of practice pad’s is that they are extremely light weight, portable and best of all, quiet. This let’s you practice you technique anywhere and at any time of day. Including late at night.

Most practice pads are made out of a high density rubber, similar to some computer mouse pads. The pads are sometimes mounted on a base made of wood or plastic. This lets you use the pad right on your lap or on top of any table. Some are also double sided. The other side provides a different feel and less rebound, making it more of a challenge to play on.

You can even purchase a practice pad that is made from a real, tunable drum head. These are much larger and are more expensive than other models.

You can purchase practice pads in a variety of different sizes. You should try to purchase the largest one you can. This will let you move around a bit and give you slightly different sounds depending on if you play near the center of the pad or close to the edges. You’ll also be more comforable playing on a real drum kit if you are used to playing on a larger practice pad.

You can buy practice pads at any drum shop, music store or online. If you go to a local music store they will have demo pads that you can play and test out. This will let you find the one that feels the best to you.

Drum pads are normally used for practicing drum rudiments. Rudiments are a particular set of drumming patterns used in music. They are great for learning stick control and rhythm. Rudiment patterns can be found for free from many sources online. There are also free videos available that show you how to play each particular pattern.
