Great practice pad with lots of variations of sound possible depending on where you hit and how hard but the black hard part I don't use. Good for snare drum practice so I am told. The sound it makes is generated by metal balls trapped in the bottom pan thing that rattles when you hit the pad. Mine is grey and black. The black portion of the pad is like hitting a brick though and the blue portion which makes the noise has a nice soft feel and responsiveness to it.

I also bought a new pair of bigger heavier Vic Firth drum sticks. Model SRHN and I am so glad I did. Using small sticks does not produce the same sound effect as having a heavy pair, and the Model SRHN are about the size of an industrial sized marker with huge tips.

I highly recommend this pad to anyone. It is almost like having a drum kit, and puts normal pads without the rattle effect to shame, regardless of the black brick that sits on top. I also highly recommend a big heavy set of sticks to make it a perfect pair.
